Two Days in Cavendish 🐟

Good afternoon! I hope you are all having a great day so far. Lots to show you today! First of all, take a look at this lovely breakfast from Leonhard’s Cafe and Restaurant. Seline and I have gone here three weeks in a row. We love their eggs benny – she gets the bacon, and I get one with guacamole and one with smoked salmon. Their bennies are served with roasted potatoes and a refreshing green salad. I always get a chai latte, and then we share a vanilla roll.

Seline and I spent Friday and Saturday in Cavendish. Cavendish is a resort area on the north shore of Prince Edward Island, in Canada, famous for beaches and cultural sites. The park’s Green Gables Heritage Place, which inspired L. M. Montgomery’s “Anne of Green Gables” novels, includes the Green Gables house and several museums.

Seline and I never “got into” the Anne novels, so we were just excited to see the amusement parks and do other fun things.

We arrived midmorning on Friday, after a 50-minute bus ride, and spent the morning at Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum. Some highlights:

  • a mirrored mirage
  • a mirror which was actually a WINDOW!?
  • Ellen Degeneres made of coffee beans
  • pieces of the Berlin Wall
  • statue of the reptile man
  • shrunken heads
  • wax model of the tallest person in recorded history, Robert Wadlow (reached 8 ft 11.1 in in height and weighed 490 lb (220 kg) at his death at age 22)
  • a tunnel with moving walls that made us lose our balance

After that, we ate at the Ship’s Pub and Galley. We shared a platter of cheesy garlic bread (DELICIOUS!) and a seafood flatbread with roasted potato and feta salad.

Afterwards, Seline and I visited the wax museum. There were plenty of wax figurines, including Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Shrek, Mila Kunis, Halle Berry, Celine Dion, and more.

Then, we mini-golfed. I am an awful golfer, and it took me about ten tries to putt the ball into the hole. Seline, on the other hand, attempted some shots with her eyes closed and got a hole-in-one. We spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing at Mariner’s Boardwalk, then walked down to the real Cavendish Boardwalk.

For dinner, we ate at Chez Yvonne. They serve plenty of homey cooking. We shared a bowl of seafood chowder, which was sadly heavily potato-based, a roll, and a plate of haddock and lobster sauce, with mashed potatoes, roasted veggies, and coleslaw.

For dessert, Chez Yvonne had a daily special of molten chocolate lava cake. This dessert is a dream come true, served with two silky scoops of vanilla ice cream. I loved the filling in this decadent, but simple chocolate cake.

Two completely unrelated things:

  • our motel room – Silverwood Motel, which is near Ripley’s Museum and Chez Yvonne
  • I got to see a little piece of the Titanic! For some reason, ten year-old me was morbidly obsessed with the Titanic – I just found the voyage to be so fascinating and remarkable. I was so thrilled to SEE, in PERSON, a real piece of the RMS Titanic. What an unbelievable opportunity.

On Saturday morning, I woke up earlier than Seline and went on a short walk to Avonlea Village, where I devoured a chocolate croissant-ish pastry and a big cup of chai. Avonlea Village has seven restaurants, including Piatto Pizzeria, Moo Moo Grilled Cheese, and Samuel’s Coffee Shop. I brought a strawberry-banana smoothie home to Seline.

Then, we checked out of Silverwood Motel and went back to Chez Yvonne, where Seline had their smallest breakfast, which consisted of one egg, two pieces of toast, roasted potatoes, and bacon.

We debated between the beach and the amusement park, then decided to try walking down to the beach.

Bad idea! The beach was an hour away, and people are meant to DRIVE to the beach. Walking down there was quite a challenge, especially with the humidity. We never made it to the beach, but sat in front of a very serene pond to watch the ducks, before we headed back.

The daisies were beautiful, and there was a massive stretch of flowers. Since the road was quiet, we took plenty of photos in the middle of the road.

The walk made us want to EAT! We headed to Island Favourites, where Seline ordered a small green salad with grilled chicken and balsamic vinegar. I had the Sailor’s Sampler – which was FOUR mini lobster rolls, one of each flavour. We shared the potato wedges and coleslaw on the side.

  4. Lobster with melted butter

In the afternoon, we did an ESCAPE ROOM, died in the escape room (it was hard!), and then took the bus back to Charlottetown. I slept through the entire bus ride, and before I knew it, was back in downtown C-Town.

For dinner, we ate at the Gahan House, where Seline and I shared chicken quesadillas and a bowl of chowder with focaccia. The quesadillas were served with roasted potatoes and green beans, plus salsa and sour cream. Seline loved the chicken quesadillas! We ate some COWS ice cream before walking home – I had a scoop of PB Cup and a scoop of Moo Malt.

On Sunday morning, the two of us went back downtown. We sipped on chai (me) and iced black tea (Seline) before browsing the Sunday Market and heading to Dave’s Lobster. At Dave’s, Seline ate the lobster grilled cheese, and I had a combo of the simple mayo + celery lobster roll and the melted butter + garlic lobster roll. Both were great, and served with pickles, salt and vinegar chips, and iced water.

Finally, I had another scoop of COWS! This time, Fluff ‘N’ Udder (chocolate with marshmallow and peanut butter cups) with PB Cup.

We relaxed at the boardwalk…

And did another escape room in the afternoon. Seline loves escape rooms! I think she’s addicted.

For dinner, I cooked a piece of herbed Atlantic salmon with carrots, zucchini, and broccoli. Dessert was a lovely piece of blueberry crisp, from Receiver Coffee Company, served with yogurt.

That’s pretty much it! I’m still working on figuring out my Fall 2018 schedule, but here is Seline’s. She is taking some great courses, like Mythology and Anthropology.

On an entirely different note, I’ve been eating the same ‘ole tasty meal every day here at work – toasted bread with a smothering of peanut butter and sliced banana, alongside yogurt and some kind of baked treat. I LOVE IT!

I Met R.L. Stine!

Hey! Hope everyone’s week has been wonderful so far.

My November simply flew by. I feel like Halloween wasn’t that long ago, and bam, here we are with snow sprinkling down our blog headers.

Anyways, on Wednesday I went to downtown Toronto to see R.L. Stine, my favourite author from childhood (who, to this day, has a big piece of my heart). Anyone else read Goosebumps, Fear Street, or Mostly Ghostly growing up?

That day, I also savoured an incredible meal at Light Cafe, where I devoured a truffle mushroom croissant, a salad with sesame dressing, lobster bisque, and this spectacular dessert of four heart-shaped Earl Grey waffles, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a scoop of chocolate ice cream, and plenty of whipped cream. Better than the stuff of my dreams.

Anyways, R.L. Stine, who goes by Bob Stine, delivered a hilarious, interactive, simple, anecdote-studded speech that engaged the entire audience. Afterwards, I was lucky to say some words to him before security whisked the crowd away. He even asked what my name was! :’) This guy’s a hero.

He also liked my perfectly-crafted tweet that used up every character. Part of the fun of Twitter, in my strange and pointless opinion, is that you get to spend time figuring out how to word things to max out the character count. 🤓

A completely different note – Moroccan tagine is so good. I’ve made it four times in the past two-ish months. I just love it. Something about the savoury tomato and cumin sauce, creamy sweet potatoes, and hearty chickpeas with flavourful couscous gets me every time.

I’m in love with tomato scrambled eggs. This was one of my earliest recipes on the blog (also back when I had a great camera 😭), since it’s so simple, classic, and ridiculously tasty. This time, I enjoyed couscous underneath.

Lots of side projects with the tutoring job – this is a study guide that I am creating. Almost done!

A Joke and Some Quotes

I started the week with a delicious tagine. Sort of… deconstructed because my pot wasn’t big enough.

Moroccan Chickpea Tagine

Serves 4

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • garlic powder
  • 1.5 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • salt and pepper
  • 1 14-oz can diced tomatoes
  • 1 15-oz can chickpeas, rinsed and drained
  • 1 head cauliflower, cored and cut into small florets
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1 pack baby spinach, chopped
  • 1 cup couscous
  • drizzle honey

OPTIONAL VEGGIES

  • carrots
  • zucchini
  • yellow squash
  • green bell pepper
  • eggplant

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Heat oil in large saucepan. Add onion. Cook until soft.
  2. Add garlic powder, cumin, cinnamon, turmeric, cayenne pepper, ginger, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp pepper, and cook until fragrant. 1 minute is enough.
  3. Add tomatoes and juice.
  4. Add chickpeas, cauliflower, raisins, 1/2 cup water, and boil.
  5. Reduce heat. Simmer, stirring occasionally, until tender and liquid has thickened – 15 to 20 mins. Add some honey.
  6. Fold spinach. Cook until wilted – another 1 or 2 mins.
  7. Place couscous in a large bowl. Add 1 cup water. Cover, let sit for 5 mins. Fluff with fork and serve with stew.

Another day, I had a tasty dinner at Scaddabush with my coworkers. I enjoyed the Zucca ravioli: butternut squash ravioli with butter-fried sage, breadcrumbs, and a garlicky, creamy sauce with plenty of black pepper and parmesan. I also loved my appetizer, which was buttered garlic bread with fresh mozzarella, balsamic vinegar, crushed toasted hazelnuts, and honey. Amazing.

Since I’m tutoring at Centennial College, I have the opportunity to create a website. This is what we have so far. Pretty fun endeavour! The site is called Anatomy Academy, and it has all the worksheets that the students use to practice for anatomy and physiology.

I spent Sunday in downtown Toronto, where I savoured this incredible platter of smoked salmon, beet-cured gravlax, and purple cornmeal pancakes. The poached duck egg and chives were the cherry on top. The Scandinavian flavours in this delicious Karelia Kitchen brunch classic were unforgettable.

Carrot cake could not be missed. Absolute perfection. 👌

I walked down Bloor, which is becoming one of my favourite streets. Little Korea is always fun to explore, and I loved this stationery store where I picked up a few pens for Seline. My sister, Seline, is now working on a new blog called Canvas Atlas. It’s a fantastic portfolio; she’s a very talented with oil painting, photography, sketching, and other artistic endeavours. I wish I could create art the way she does.

One of my students brought me this slice of homemade banana bread. It was so tasty, and I loved every bite. Banana bread is truly one of my faves in any way, shape, or form.

Another day, I went to Bake Code, a Taiwanese bakery in the York Mills area. There, I bought a taro knot (delicious) which I ate with Thai green curry, topped with crushed cashews.

The broccoli-cheddar quiche that I made was also very, very yummy with mushroom soup.

Shopping list – all the green words are things that I’m going to use to make some Christmas-inspired treats when the time comes around. It’s never to early to prep for Christmas, in my opinion. 😉

Beautiful book from the library by the inspirational, talented, articulate Malala. I love reading about girls my age who use their voices to create positive ripples in the world. Go, Malala, go! ❤

Another day, I visited the Toronto Pan Am Centre. Wish I brought my bathing suit; this gym is stunning but also pricey. Would have been super fun for a drop-in session or two.

A Chinese family moved into my town. There was a pair of twins: a boy called Ving and a girl called Ling. I became food friends with Ving. I learned that Ving HATED his name, and he wanted to change it to Lee, like Bruce Lee. I really wanted him to change his name to Lee. Ving decided to change his name, even though Ling disagreed. They went to town hall, and he filled out his name change sheet. He looked very conflicted.

Finally, Ving decided not to change his name. He asked the receptionist to cancel the request. I was disappointed. The receptionist said there would be a cancellation fee, and handed the fee receipt to Ling.

I said, “don’t stop, be Lee, Ving. Hold on to that fee, Ling.”

Curried Lentil Pumpkin Soup

Serves 4

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 tbsp oil
  • small yellow onion, diced
  • garlic powder, to taste
  • 1/2 tbsp grated fresh ginger
  • 7.5 oz pumpkin puree (about 1 cup)
  • 1/2 cup dried red lentils
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1/2 tbsp curry powder (mild or hot)
  • salt, to taste
  • pepper, to taste
  • cayenne, to taste
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • pinch nutmeg
  • pinch coriander
  • pinch cumin
  • honey, if desired
  • pumpkin seeds to garnish
  • lime to taste, or for garnish
  • coconut milk (little bit to thicken and add creaminess)

Mix-Ins to Add When Sautéing (add them with the onions)

  • chopped carrot
  • tiny cauliflower florets
  • baby spinach or kale
  • celery
  • tomato
  • couscous

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Sauté onion, garlic, and ginger in large pot with oil, until onions are soft and transparent. Add desired vegetables. I tossed in some chopped carrot and celery.
  2. Add pumpkin puree, red lentils, broth, and curry powder. Add other desired spices. Stir to combine.
  3. Place a lid on the pot and turn up the heat to medium high. Boil.
  4. Turn the heat down again. Simmer on low for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. After 20 mins, lentils should be soft and the soup thickened. Add coconut milk. Stir in any kale or spinach. I added baby spinach at the end to wilt.
  5. Season well. Serve with lime and pumpkin seeds on top.

Charcoal Waffles ♡_♡

Mmmm, pizza. It’s been a while since I’ve had truly, truly amazing pizza and this one from Lamanna’s, an Italian bakery and hot table in Scarborough, did not disappoint. Smothered in provolone and mushrooms, the toppings were simple and tasty – but the crust, charred to perfection, was my favourite part.

Dessert? Large gelato with a scoop of pistachio and a scoop of hazelnut (check out that size compared to the little gelato spoon and my water bottle!) – followed by an unpictured lobster tail cream pastry. Talk about an amazing lunch!

Another day, I had lunch at Light Cafe in downtown Toronto, a chic and modern new spot in Baldwin Village.

The truffled mushroom croissant is their specialty, loaded with creamy truffle mayonnaise, sliced tomato, shiitake mushrooms, and lettuce. The croissant was toasted and tasted fresh. Salad was dressed in sesame, and had plenty of fresh tomatoes inside.

The soup was another highlight: rich, creamy, savoury Lobster Bisque!

For dessert, I had to order the famous Light Cafe dish – black sesame waffles. There were four heart-shaped black sesame waffles, made with charcoal for that incredible colour, a little vial of rich sesame syrup, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and a scoop of black sesame ice cream. All of it was devoured. 😇

Waffles with ice cream is hands-down one of my favourite desserts of all time, and bonus points for special-flavoured waffles like ube (purple yam, specialty of the Philippines), black sesame, or red bean.

This is one of my favourite photographs from my trip downtown. I love how 50% of it is that urban traffic look with trees in the back, and the other half is a pretty lake with trees, and apartments in the back. The contrast is cool!

The reason for my Toronto trip? Stock. Up. On. Muffins. Since I don’t go downtown very often, and I won’t be going often anymore since it’s starting to get chilly, I bought plenty of muffins, chopped ’em into thirds or quarters, and stashed them in the freezer. These are some of the muffins I remember:

  • carrot
  • banana chocolate chip
  • mixed berry and oat
  • cornmeal

There were definitely more, but that’s all for the ones I can recall. 😎 Apparently, I seem to like muffins a lot?

Excitement. In the form of a delicious plate of coconut Thai green curry with broccoli, mushrooms, onion, and carrots – and in the form of a new book. Sci-fi isn’t really my genre, but this one, RUSH by Eve Silver, had me intrigued all the way through.

A trip to the library meant I took lots more snapshots of the books that are on my to-be-read list. I can’t wait to take these out and see if they’re good.

On Mid-Autumn Festival, which is like Chinese Thanksgiving, I had an incredible meal at a buffet called Dragon’s Pearl, with friends of my grandfather. I. Love. Buffets. So what did I enjoy this time?

  • yorkshire pudding, mashed potatoes and gravy
  • steamed ginger and scallion fish
  • Japanese sweet egg, bean curd sushi, other assorted sushi
  • stir-fried vegetables, crispy stir-fried noodles
  • peking duck on a flatbread, with sweet and sour sauce and cucumber
  • creamy crab salad
  • crispy shrimp cakes
  • garlic mussels
  • grilled salmon and plaintains

Dessert was just as delicious.

  • tiramisu
  • green tea cake
  • sweet sesame mochi ball (favourite)
  • regular cheesecake
  • unsweetened cheesecake
  • bread pudding with golden raisins, whipped cream on top (#2 favourite)

Do you like buffets? I’m a sucker for variety, so I adore buffets!

One morning, I had some quiet time to myself in the office so I started designing a new poster for the Integumentary System, which is the system about human skin, hair, and nails.

Totally random note here. This is such a beautiful logo! I like graphic design a lot and want to learn more about designing lettering.

The Vancouver Pastry Taste-off

Ultimate 5-Sentence Backstory: I love almond croissants. I really, really, really love almond croissants. I left my home in BC to come back to Ontario for work. Dad offered to take me on a Vancouver almond croissant tour. I was told to not be too greedy…

Yes, I know it’s not a croissant… but why don’t we talk about it anyways?

Sour cherry buckwheat scone from Purebread Bakery ($4.50): crispy exterior, very tender inside, excellent flavour with a strong, toasty, grainy (but not excessive) buckwheat taste. I really enjoyed it. The texture is crumbly, which I really like and look for in a good scone, and it is studded with fairly large, juicy dried cherries. This is one of my favourite scones of all time, and in fact, I chose to come to Purebread for this scone, which I’ve had before (and have been thinking about, ever since). I vaguely remember there being white chocolate chunks in this scone previously, but I did not find any chunks of white chocolate this time.

Almond croissant from Sweet Victory Bakery ($9.50 for the croissant and a London Fog tea latte): firm, loose/separated layers, chewy, hard, scantily-filled. This was my least favourite croissant because it was more hard than crispy, causing me to suspect that it had been baked a day or two ago. I picked up a London Fog tea latte from Sweet Victory, and enjoyed it greatly, despite it being a little cooler than I would’ve liked – they nailed the flavour and I liked the touch of latte art, which I rarely see on tea lattes. Completely unrelated: the bakery itself was quite nice, and I loved the modern décor (marble, geometric gold, wood finishings).

Double-baked almond croissant from Thomas Haas: heartily-filled, and the almond filling was reminiscent of blanched almond flour. It was not very gooey, and held its shape nicely. The layers were buttery, and the exterior crisp (not hard). There was much more filling than the almond croissant from Sweet Victory, and the texture was better as well. In fact, Thomas Haas’s almond croissant beat the almond croissant from Sweet Victory in every sense: taste, texture, and in my opinion, presentation. This croissant was my dad’s second favourite, and my mom and I ranked it third place.

Lavender Earl Grey scone from Purebread Bakery ($4.50): lavender haters beware – this scone was extremely strong in lavender flavour. I could barely detect the Earl Grey, and had I not known it was a lavender Earl Grey scone, I would’ve assumed it was purely lavender. My dad disliked this scone greatly, as he hates lavender. You can smell the lavender from quite a distance away. My favourite thing about this scone was the dense, buttery texture. I don’t want to say that it was fudge-like, but it was truly a dense, thick scone with immense buttery flavour.

Almond pistachio croissant from Thomas Haas: this croissant had a large “puff”, in that there was a lot of air space between the base, where the filling ended, and the peak of the croissant. The filling was minimal. Unlike Delysees (Toronto), where the pistachio croissant is filled to the brim with gooey pistachio paste, this croissant had a mere smudge of pistachio-almond paste, which was disappointing. The texture of the pistachio was similar to chestnut, noted my mom. My dad pointed out that the filling could be saltier. This croissant was truly a disappointment; I would’ve liked to see at least six times as much filling and a crispier exterior, as if it’d been double-baked like the almond croissant from Thomas Haas. Both Thomas Haas croissants came in cute paper bags (unlike the paper bags from other places), and I was offered a nice plastic bag to hold the two.

Double baked rhubarb cheesecake croissant from Beaucoup Bakery ($4.60): fantastic topping. The topping of this double baked rhubarb cheesecake croissant was the best of the batch. I loved the crispiness of the top, as well as the caramelized sugar on the base. As for the filling, the rhubarb was cooked until very tender, though not mushy, and carried its signature sour flavour. The sweet, crusty exterior provided excellent contrast to the sour-tender filling of the rhubarb and cheesecake. My mom noted that the cheesecake filling tasted like sour cream, so it would’ve been nice to detect some citrus or vanilla notes in the cheesecake batter filling. On a different note, we felt that the chunks of rhubarb inside were too big and would’ve been more enjoyable if they were cut smaller.

Chocolate almond croissant from Beaucoup Bakery ($4.60): incredible croissant. My dad ranked this one in second place, while my mom and I felt like it should come in third. It was filled generously, and the chocolate was rich and satisfying. Almonds covered the top generously, but I wish the chocolate had been more evenly spread. We cut the croissant in fourths, and my quarter was almost entirely filled with chocolate while my parents’s pieces lacked chocolate completely. Regardless, this croissant was tender inside and had rich, buttery layers that I would not hesitate to order again and again.

Almond croissant from Timbertrain Coffee Roastery ($4.90): good thing we tried this one last, because all three of us agreed that this croissant was the number-one croissant of the batch. First of all, the filling was more “liquid-y” than the filling from Thomas Haas’s croissant, and all three of us enjoyed the gooeyness. The layers tasted like perfectly-toasted bread, though one end of the croissant was slightly burned. Despite being crisp, the croissant was anything but hard. The filling was sweet, but not too sweet, and the exterior provided great contrast. We also enjoyed the base of the croissant, which carried the taste and texture of caramelized sugar. There was no doubt that this almond croissant came in first place, and I would easily go back to Vancouver for more of these. My only complaint? Timbertrain Coffee Roastery doesn’t make tea lattes – I wanted a London Fog tea latte, but they could only make mistos (steamed milk + tea base), as they don’t have syrups in their cafe.

It’s Finals Week…

The last two weeks looked like this, and we aren’t finished yet, so behold a very short post 🙂

Back home in BC, Seline has been loving the bacon, eggs, and toast breakfast combo. I can’t wait to replicate this when I get home, too!

The school’s free fitness schedule is up, and I can’t wait to start attending classes once my exams are over.

Cherries are in season! This made a lovely snack. Yogurt is on the bottom, and there are also coconut chips and granola in the mix.

 

Yesterday was the last day of Biomechanics and Sociology, so we took a group photo with our professor (missing some, though). 😦

I had a really good almond croissant from the Tempered Room frozen for a few months since Toronto, and I finally heated it up in the microwave for a great breakfast.

 

So glad that my Biomechanics course is over. I took two in the last year, and needless to say, I am so done with rigid link modelling.

Yesterday, I enjoyed a sandwich and soup at Princess Cafe. The sandwich consisted of salty proscuitto, salty pesto-mayo, roasted sweet corn, harvarti cheese, and spinach. Garlicky beet soup was consumed.

My friends and I in the sun before an exam last week. We play frisbee to get our energy levels up!

 

I’m not sure if I mentioned this in a previous post, but I will be moving to Scarborough in September for my next co-op job at Centennial College, where I’ll be tutoring. My new home is a 17-minute walk from the skating rink!

Off to study now! Today I am looking at my physiology notes.
