I think this calls for some kind of celebration – chocolate? Muffins? Or a decadent brunch at a cute cafe? YES!

Last Sunday, I visited Timeless Cafe and Bakery, which is located in North Waterloo. I took the bus from my house after a nice hot yoga session. I’m so disappointed because I only have 2 sessions left on my 10-class pass!

Anyways, this adorable cafe was formerly a hen house – but it’s been refurnished so beautifully that you would’ve never guessed. The hen house is actually over 100 years old, which I thought was very cool! Since it’s located in North Waterloo, it’s in a quiet, isolated place surrounded by fields of wheat. I was pretty confused on my walk here – I thought Google Maps was lying to me (it wouldn’t be the first time). πŸ˜‰

Honestly, Timeless Cafe and Bakery is such a hidden gem. Since Uptown Waterloo and the places near campusΒ are more popular, this place feels so special. The hours are pretty interesting, though. I wish they were open during that “afternoon gap” so students like myself could stop by for a hot drink and a baked goodie while studying.

Timeless uses fine, fresh, and local ingredients that match the changing seasons. They have quite an extensive drink menu, as well as lots of vegetarian lunch options. They serve breakfast, lunch, dinner, and brunch on Sundays.

They are famous for homemade cookies, biscotti, macarons, and scones. I wanted a raspberry white chocolate scone, but they were sold out by the time I was ready to buy one. Next time!

Their menu changes weekly, but there are daily specials that are posted on this unique chalkboard. I was thinking about the veggie quiche, but I’m pretty sure nothing can compare to the incredible goat cheese quiche I enjoyed at Angelina’s in Paris.

There was live music (he was a great singer!), chatting families, and couples. The waitresses were bright and perky, and mine was very sweet. She made me feel very welcome and comfortable. Unfortunately I felt a little out of place being there on my own, but it was nice to soak up the atmosphere and have some time to myself.

I started with a chocolate milk – was debating between the hot chocolate and the chocolate milk, but finally decided on something cool. This was Natrel brand dark chocolate milk, which was so yummy. I might buy a small carton the next time I go grocery shopping.

I accidentally finished my entire drink before my entree arrived: roasted salmon eggs benedict with arugula, red onion, and get this – brown butter hollandaise. Oh my goodness.

This was as amazing as it looked! The best part was actually the scallion-Dijon biscuit underneath. I’m not a fan of English muffins, but I adore eggs benedict – so the crumbly, scone-like biscuit was the best substitution possible. The hollandaise was rich, buttery, and had delicious hints of hazelnut. Unfortunately I felt like the sauce was a bit coagulated and not as natural/runny as I would’ve liked, but the flavour was top-notch. I wish I asked the red onions to be replaced with chopped chives or scallions since I can’t stand the aftertaste of red onions. How about you? Do you like red onions?

And of course, I couldn’t leave without dessert! The special of the day was the dark chocolate truffle cake with coconut whipped cream. I was thinking about this cake as I enjoyed my dinner, and decided that I HAD to get it when an elderly couple ordered two and I watched the waitress bring the two plates out. They looked so rich and delicious that I couldn’t resist! Their plates had cute chocolate cakes topped with a blob of whipped cream and it looked divine.

When my waitress came out, my mouth nearly dropped open in surprise – mine was adorned with TWO blobs of cream, blueberries and a strawberry, plus a sprinkle of toasted coconut! How lucky am I? Of course, this dessert was 100% demolished.Β It was dark and chocolatey, but not overpoweringly bitter. The creamy, sweet coconut cream complemented it nicely, and I am so grateful for the extra berries. The toasted coconut added great textural contrast.

I took a nice, much-needed walk up and down the street as I waited for my bus, then headed home for a relaxing evening.

  1. Congratulations on your 200th post! I’m not anywhere near the Timeless Cafe and Bakery, unfortunately. Never mind, I’ll have an extra doughnut on your behalf to celebrate. (I know it’s a big sacrifice on my part, but I’ll force myself.) πŸ™‚

  2. I agree, dining alone is actually very calming. I like that I don’t have to worry about being judged for red onion breath! What can I say–onions taste great!
    I would’ve loved the eggs benedict! Poached eggs are my favorite way to have them πŸ˜› congratulations on your 200th post! You deserve the celebration!

    1. They do taste great! Same as garlic, which is unfortunate. I try having those two for dinner so I have a full night + morning to get rid of onion breath πŸ˜‰
      Oh you absolutely would! I have always been too intimidated to poach eggs at home, which is why I always, always, always order bennies when I go out. Do you poach your own eggs?
      This was actually a “so-not-ready-for-the-week” celebration so I was happy to find that it was my 200th post, which was a total coincidence πŸ™‚

  3. I actually like dining alone. It’s a great time to decompress and really enjoy my food. Though, I would have totally enjoyed joining you at this restaurant! The atmosphere looks wonderful. I bet I would have loved that tomato basil soup I see on the menu.
    I agree with you on red onions, the aftertaste kind of ruins them. It sticks with me all day, no matter how much I brush my teeth!

    1. I know exactly what you mean! Sometimes dining with another person (or other people) gives me the pressure to talk and be social when really, I just want to think and eat πŸ™‚ Maybe that’s why I like mornings so much!
      Tomato basil soup is always great, especially in the cooler weather! I was considering a big bowl of that πŸ™‚
      They taste pretty good combined with other things – in your mouth – but as soon as they’ve been swallowed it’s like you can taste it from your throat for the longest time! When I wore braces I would taste red onions and garlic for days…TMI? I was frustrated because I love garlic and nothing seems to work in erasing the taste!
