Why I Hate Tomatoes

I officially hate tomatoes! I’ve always known that I found them sort of… icky.

DSC02517

But oatmeal is still my love. 🙂 This lovely bowl was topped with raspberry oatmeal muffin, maple syrup, and shredded coconut.

DSC02516 DSC02515

Last week, we had brunch (or, more lunch because it was about 12:30) at Trattoria, the new Italian restaurant in Burnaby. My family was pretty excited to try it out. We were all really disappointed when the server didn’t give us the lunch menu – apparently they serve brunch until 3:00. I really wanted to order off the lunch menu!

DSC02480 DSC02484

Grandma started with the asparagus and mushroom omelet with green salad and roasted potatoes. Seline adored the potatoes and probably ate 3/4 of Grandma’s taters! Uncle Charles had a prosciutto pizza.

DSC02485 DSC02488

I tried a slice, and was pretty impressed! The crust was thin and crispy, but nothing special. The prosciutto had great flavour, and I liked the melty blobs of cheese with sharp contrast by the arugula. Yummy!

DSC02489 DSC02490

Grandpa had the tomato pasta with shrimp. He thought it was okay. Mom ordered a panini with fig and prosciutto. This was nothing special either, but the fig jam really stood out.

DSC02491 DSC02492

My plate had a little of everything – seafood omelet from Dad and a meatball from Seline with ricotta cheese, too.

DSC02493 DSC02494

That meatball was the best part! She had three meatballs and I probably ate two of them. 😛

DSC02495 DSC02496

But wait… where was my food?

We waited,

and waited.

Then I asked where it went, and the server said it would be coming right up.

When it came, we were all shocked – plain chopped tomatoes with one blob of burrata and three pieces of torn basil. I ordered the caprese salad expecting a lovely array of fresh sliced tomato, basil, and balsamic vinegar, but there was no balsamic at all. There wasn’t even a slice of mozzarella cheese!

Luckily, this came for free because it took so long for them to make it.

DSC02498 DSC02499

But the tomatoes were pretty icky and I did not like them at all!

Luckily dessert redeemed the whole meal: Whole Foods New York Cheesecake with berries. Usually I prefer baking my own cakes, but this was too special to pass up. And, okay, I was pretty disappointed after my soggy, flavourless tomatoes and needed something sweet!

DSC02500 DSC02501

^ it was fantastic. I had two little slices and kept coming back for “one more bite”.

DSC02507 DSC02506

The cheesecake was followed by a 1.5-hour gym session. I HATE going to the gym – I honestly absolutely hate it – as I would much rather be figure skating or practicing aerial silks as I do most of the time. But since I was going to the library anyways, I headed next door to the gym because I had to kill another two hours. 🙂

DSC02505 DSC02508

Workout was followed by a nice dinner: roasted potatoes, maple-soy salmon, and stir-fried bean sprouts. The potatoes and bean sprouts were just okay, but I really loved the salmon as usual.

DSC02512 DSC02513

Dad’s plate included tofu and hard-boiled Chinese-style eggs.

DSC02511 DSC02510

Not a bad dinner! 🙂 The protein-rich salmon was really satisfying after running/ellipticalling.

It’s 12:48 now on a Pro-D Day Friday and I’m currently waiting for my friend to come over so we can study before our AP exams in two weeks. That’s why I haven’t been posting very often these days – super busy with work and studying – but I’ll be back to normal after my last exam on May 14. 🙂 Thanks for reading!

    1. Four exams?! Crazy – how do you stay sane? 😉 Do you have big plans for university? I’ve never taken an ACT exam but I did my SATs last year. Are they similar?
Also I was accepted to UC Berkeley and UCLA recently for Nutritional Science, and I was SO shocked and thrilled, but it is really, really expensive. 😥 Will 99% be going to McGill instead. Grade 11 is the best time to start planning your future in university and the financial portion of it – it is pretty disappointing to make it in and then realize it costs three times as much as you thought it would!

ANYWAYS long reply but GOOD LUCK on your exams! I am sure you’ll nail every single one of them. Eat lots of blueberries and almond butter to boost that brainpower!

      1. That’s the trick–I don’t! X’D lol blogging, cooking and exercising are my main therapies! I’m looking into all the UCs and colleges further North like UO and UW, with the exception of UA (University of Arizona for their Pharmacy program). How many SATs did you take? The ACT is much like the SAT except there are four long sections: English, Math, Reading and Science, and the Writing (essay) part is optional. It’s also a lot more straightforward. So far I’ve taken both.
Congratulations on your acceptances–those are the top UCs! It’s too bad that you can’t go, but McGill sounds like a very promising place for you. Everyone eventually seems to find the right place in the end. 🙂 Where else did you apply?
Yes, junior year has been a roller coaster of insanity, late-night studying, tears, smiles, and lots of green tea to keep me awake! You’re a senior now, right? It must be exciting to go to college in less than two months!
I don’t plan on going out-of-state in order to keep tuition to a minimum and I haven’t been looking into any colleges outside of the country to begin with.
Thank you very much, and I hope so! 😀 And eating those will DEFINITELY not be a problem. I actually just had some overnight oats in my nearly empty almond butter jar, so I got some of that! :p also posted a long reply, but whatevs! 😉

      2. Cooking is basically the best therapy! Even chopping veggies 🙂 Do you have a blog post on your workout schedule?
Aaah I see! So you’ll be staying the USA for sure? I know a couple of Americans who want to venture into Canada just for a change. But I’m sure whichever university you choose will be lucky to have you!

I only took one! The regular SAT with reading, writing, and math. Oh, the ACT doesn’t sound fun at all! I wonder why College Board needs to have two of these big exams. :/ I also applied to the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University (literally 10 mins from my house), University of Toronto, and University of Waterloo. I was accepted for Kinesiology and life science for all of these schools and had a tough time deciding! OH and for the states, I was also interested in Cornell because of their nutrition program, but I got disqualified because I didn’t write Subject SATs. Oops – should probably read the requirements next time, hahah!

It’s crazy! I know what you mean. It just gets more intense in grade 12 🙂 Yep, I’m a senior – even though I still feel 13 years old… and it is SO exciting! But also sad, right? I’ll miss my cute little hometown and my nice house and my family. 😥 Enjoy your Grade 11 year! It may be the busiest and most stressful at times, but it will be a year filled with fun and memorable moments that you’ll look back on for a long time. Do your best and make time for friends and family, too! And food. Obviously 🙂

Woot! At one point I thought I was the only person who had oatmeal every single morning. So glad to hear that you like oats too! Although I prefer hot, stovetop-cooked oats. 🙂 You should try making yours with almond milk and yogurt (if that’s not what you already do). You can also add sliced banana to make it sweeter! OMG DUDE have you ever had Barney Butter? Hey, and I thought of something that I should’ve written in the other comment – the American brand Justin’s Almond Butter! I need to try that stuff! Have you ever had it? No Whole Foods or organic food store here in BC sells Justin’s, but I really, really, really want to try their nut butter 🙂 Thanks for reading this rant…

      3. Totally, I can spend hours in the kitchen! I don’t have a post on my exact workout schedule but I generally workout twice in the morning–one long Pilates session in the morning and one short HIIT workout in the afternoon. Would it be a good idea to talk about my workout schedule in a later post?
I also know some friends who want to go to Canada for their university years! I’m staying in the US but I wouldn’t mind traveling there at all! The ACT was quite interesting–at first I felt good but near the end I was about to die! I’m not sure either, but some tests are more popular in certain states than others. Anyways, those are wonderful schools and congratz on getting accepted to all of them! So cool that you’re also looking into nutrition! So you applied to some colleges with different majors? And no worries about Cornell since you already got accepted into other awesome schools!
The end of 11th grade is getting even crazier 😦 especially with finals and AP exams! I only have two finals because I only have AP exams from my other classes. How many AP exams and finals did you have? I might be so busy I won’t go to prom–but there’s always senior year! It does seem scary about going to college so soon, but I’m excited! I actually felt old at the start of sophomore year XD oh and family and friends are so important in my life! In my Vietnamese culture family is the most important spectrum. I always make time for them. And YES I have to make time for food! It’s a necessity!
I love hot oats too, but both taste good. I don’t have oatmeal every morning but I do try to have them at least once a week! I get bored of having the same thing every morning so I need variety! I’ve tried Greek yogurt as well as coconut and cashew milk with oatmeal and they’re so good! Coconut yogurt with oats is my faveeeeee 🙂 and I’ve had bananas and oats together–so good as long as the bananas are super ripe! Sounds weird but lately I’ve been adding egg whites to my oats. They make my oatmeal super creamy and fluffy! Have you ever tried that? And do you have other oatmeal combo recommendations? Also, how do you make your oats super thick and creamy?
You have no idea–I’ve seen Barney Butter everywhere!! What’s your favorite flavor of that brand? I really want to try Cocoa + Coconut, Honey + Flax, Vanilla Bean + Espresso, pretty much everything! Ooooh and you have to try Justin’s! Their maple almond butter is the best!! LOL they’re not cheap for nut butters, though 😦 and no problemo whatsoever!

      5. Hahaha no worries!

You should definitely do a workout schedule post. I am sure lots of people (like me) are curious about what you do to stay fit! What time do you have to get up in the morning to work out?
That’s good that you only have two finals + AP exams. They’re coming up so soon! But you’re only in Grade 11 – why do you have AP exams? :O Here in Canada you can’t take them until senior year unless you’ve skipped a grade. I’m taking Biology AP and Chemistry AP which are only two and a half short weeks away! WHOA you can go to prom in junior year? I was not aware of that LOL… is that an American thing?

What other breakfasts do you enjoy? I know you have pancakes and yogurt – anything else in the rotation? Do you like savoury breakfasts like eggs and toast? OMG! Coconut yogurt with oatmeal is so super yummy. And yes, the bananas have to be brown and spotty. My sis likes green, CRUNCHY bananas and I have no idea what’s wrong with her! Ripe bananas are where it’s at – sometimes I mash up entire black bananas and add it to oatmeal with some cocoa powder for sweet-but-not-too-sweet chocolate pudding oatmeal. So yummy! I’ve actually never tried egg whites because I had a bad experience one time with a whole egg – the proteins denatured and it became stringy and separated. It was really gross because I was trying to make French Toast oatmeal with spices, maple, and egg. Didn’t work out! But egg whites would probably be awesomely creamy, especially if you add them slowly (to temper them) and at a low temp, right? Sounds like I’ve got a breakfast idea for tomorrow 😉

My typical bowl of oatmeal is made with 3/4 cup almond milk/skim milk and 1/3 cup oats, lots of cinnamon, 1 tbsp flax and 1 tsp chia. Sometimes I slice a banana inside (or mash it, if super super ripe). I need to have oatmeal with nut butter. Without nut butter, oatmeal is nothing IMO. 🙂 So nut butter, fresh berries/chopped fruit like peaches, and hemp hearts. Then I add some crumbled muffin or quick bread, which seems weird but is amazing because you get bites of dessert while eating breakfast, and you’re “spreading” the flavour better. Like, rather than having a 400-calorie WF muffin in one sitting, you can have 1/5 of it for 80 cals, distributed evenly on your oatmeal to make every bite taste like a 400-calorie treat. You know what I mean? Crumbled muffins are so, SO yummy on oatmeal, especially if they’re homemade. You can also try adding granola if you like crunch. I recently got my braces tightened and have elastics, so I absolutely can’t have crunchy stuff for a while. But granola, especially Quaker Honey Harvest, is so good on warm oats. Then I always add a drizzle of maple syrup or local honey. 🙂

AHHH! You are so, so lucky to have so many BB flavours. Here in BC I’ve only ever seen Original Creamy and Original Crunchy. HOLY COW I was not even aware of the fact that there were so many flavours! Cocoa and coconut sounds to die for! I wonder if Justin’s can mail to Canada… 😉

      6. Thanks for the suggestion! I’m actually doing a Q&A/FAQ blog post in the future, so I’ll defintely elaborate more on my workout schedule then! I do like working out first thing when I wake up and it just depends when that happens! Do you have a workout schedule of your own? What do you like to do for exercise?
Yep, they are in two weeks! WHOOPIE -_- our first AP class and exam were given in 10th grade, and that was World History. Most schools in America don’t give AP exams until 11th grade, though. Wow, I’m taking those classes right now! LOL I’m scared for those exams! I guess it is an American thing to go to prom junior year! Probably depends, though! So does Canada reserve APs and prom for only seniors?
I love super thick smoothies! One of my favorites is chocolate nana ice cream which is just frozen bananas, ice, someties Stevia and cacao powder! Sometimes I go crazy and add some peanut butter! 😛 I don’t usually buy bread so I don’t have toast often, but I would really like to try sprouted Ezekiel cinnamon raisin bread. I do love savory breakfasts–eggs are the bomb! Actually today I had scrambled eggs with kale, sweet potato and Sriracha! Oh my lord how can someone stomach that?! But black naners FTW and they’re so good in baking too! OMG sorry about the French toast dilemma! Yeah I wouldn’t think whole eggs would taste good unless you put a shizload of bananas with it XD Just cook the egg whites on low heat and stir constantly! Lemme know how it turns out!
That’s a great combo! Have you ever tried cashew milk? It’s so good and creamy! Glad you never forget the nut butter 😀 I’ve never tried putting crumbled muffins or quick bread on oats, but I have to try it! Yeah, I get the point with your WF muffin! I do that with carob chips where I use a smaller amount and break them apart in tiny pieces so I get more chocolatey chunks in every bite! Haha I had braces from 5th-8th grade! I drank/ate whatever was on the “no” list though XD I don’t have granola often but it sounds so good! I usually use Stevia, cinnamon maple or vanilla extract as my sweeteners. But maple is delicious! Have you ever tried adding cocoa or cacao powder? Do you like chocolate oatmeal?
I didn’t know you can’t find those flavors in Canada! Maybe you can try having them shipped! And do try Justin’s! You’ll be obsessed! Do you have a Trader Joe’s in Canada? They have a delicious crunchy peanut butter with flax and chia seeds! I think you’ll love it! What are your favorite grocery stores?

      7. That’s true – it’s great to exercise first thing in the morning so you can check that off your daily “to-do” list and get that out of the way 🙂 Yay! I am excited to read your FAQ post. Maybe you could make it a page rather than a post! Do you live close to your gym? I like to switch it up when it comes to exercise because I get bored really easily! I skate 6:30-8:00 most mornings, and sometimes during my lunch block at school (my school is right next to the gym + pool + rink + library). On Saturdays I do aerial silks, and hot yoga on Sunday mornings! Sometimes I don’t exercise at all in a day 😦 – usually when there are lots of tests coming up. But I definitely try my best to dance with my sis when I can (TO DISNEY SONGS LOL), walk my dog, walk to school, and that’s pretty much it! OH and I work as a skating teacher at the rink (6 hours/week) so maybe that counts for light exercise too 😛

WHOA! Grade 10? That is crazy. I don’t know how some American students can handle 15 AP classes O_O I am sure you will do really, really well on your exams though! You seem like a motivated person and I’m sure that extends to your studies as well. SO COOL! In Canada only seniors can go to prom and write AP exams. You should still go, though, because I’m sure it will be a blast. Do you have a dress?

HOLY COW that sounds so yummy! I totally want some of that now. You know… I think you just inspired my dessert for tonight 🙂

I literally JUST went to freeze a couple bananas because I can’t wait to try that out! I think I’ll be adding just frozen bananas and cocoa powder – maybe some dates or maple for sweetness? I’m not into Stevia 🙂 Yes – peanut butter would be amazing!

OMG you know what’s really unfortunate? There’s NO EZEKIEL BREAD HERE! It’s so upsetting because so many bloggers rave about it and I really want to try it out! So jealous. Your breakfast sounds so tasty. Kale is actually really good with eggs, and sweet potatoes are better than candy! I had the craziest breakfast this morning – I put eggs, three handfuls of spinach, and pesto into the blender, then cooked it like an omelet and topped it with sharp white cheddar. Sometimes I hate spinach in omelets because it gets stuck in my braces, and blending it up was SO fun and tasty.

Yes! Tomorrow morning I will totally do the egg whites in oatmeal. Any topping ideas?

Nope, I’ve never tried cashew milk. Do you like it better than almond milk? DUDE, I’ve had braces for five years 😦 My teeth weren’t even too bad before – one was just out of place – but I had to get 4 teeth pulled. I also wear elastics, and had a retainer, AND I wore headgear for two years… it was sad. But kinda funny now.

YESSS CHOCOLATE OATMEAL IS MY LIFE! It’s like my comfort food. Whenever I’m stressed out I have chocolate oats in the morning! I wonder if I can get it shipped over because I NEED it. Like now. 🙂 No, the closest TJs is in Bellingham (about two hours away). When I go next time I’ll have to pick that up! I know some other bloggers love it too. Woot! Since there aren’t many organic grocery stores here, I’d have to say 1) Whole Foods, 2) Superstore (decent organic section), 3) Costco (bulk + cheap!) How about you?

        Liked by 1 person

      8. Thank you so much! I would definitely make it a page so others can see it too. I actually live in a community with a public gym, so I do! I haven’t gone in ages because of school 😦 wow, that’s awesome! You can do that during lunch breaks?? I try to exercise almost every day with one rest yoga/abs day. Sometimes I study while exercising haha XD Disney songs are the best! I like princess songs but all of them are awesome. What are your favorite songs? Walking is fabulous exercise–do you do it for a long time? What a great job as a teacher! Yes it would count as exercise 😀 how did you get hired?
Actually, my school is one of the few that limits AP classes to 8 maximum total. I can’t believe people would take that many classes–how do they sleep?! Thank you again very much–I’m studying hard! I’m not going to prom this year because if I do, I have to go to a mandatory after
party that lasts until 2 AM so yeah no 😛 I have a few dresses, but none that suite prom! How was your experience?
And please try the nana ice cream! I just had some today for breakfast and it was delish! Definitely add dates or maple if your bananas aren’t ripe. You can pretty much add whatever you want, but chocolate and peanut butter are the best! Let me know how it is!
WTF?! No Ezekiel bread?? How is that even real. You can try to find sprouted bread which is essentially what Ezekiel is! What exactly is quick bread, otherwise? It sounds cool! Thanks, it was amazing! Kale omelets are SO good, and people don’t think sweet potatoes taste good with eggs! Ummmmm hello what about potato hash? LOL anyways your pesto concoction sounds super tasty! I should try doing that instead of whisking it by hand! I might end up with green eggs 😀
Ooooooh make sure to use nut butter and more chocolate! Fruit is also a good idea, but you can use chia seeds, nuts, whatever! Cashew milk is amazing! It’s creamier and sweeter than almond milk, plus it’s easier to make by hand because you don’t need a pulp bag! I really like it, but it depends on the individual. I hated braces :/ didn’t look good on me plus flossing was sooooooo hard! That sucks! Was it as painful as someone would think? I have a retainer but I only wear it at night. I wore elastics at night but that was only for a short period of time, but never headgear. My sister wore it and it was so funny XD Do you know when you get your braces off?
You can never go wrong with chocolate oatmeal. It’s definitely comfort food! I have chocolate and nut butter when I’m stressed out. It works every time! Definitely try to see if you can ship it! You’ll LOVE it, and I’ll definitely try Barney Butter soon! Aw well at least you live near a Whole Foods! I don’t go there often at all because it’s so expensive 😥 I’ve never heard of Superstore. Is it only in Canada? Otherwise, I love TJ’s, my local farmer’s market, Costco for bulk foods like eggs and Greek yogurt, Whole Foods and some Asian supermarkets! I love Sprouts but I don’t go often 😦 don’t know why! Once in a while I go to Ralph’s for convenience. Do you have a farmer’s market?
